University Forest Solitude

The very clean monastery has a good location above Kandy and only accepts men. A library is available. There are few mosquitoes on the premises and after rain leeches in tolerable numbers.

Participation in the daily routine (sweeping, breakfast, lunch, evening chanting and meditation) is mandatory.

Tradition and Teacher: Amarapura group of the Theravada forest monastery tradition.

Meditation Technique: Various methods from the Theravada tradition (mainly the Mahasi or Pa-Auk method).

Language(s): English and Sinhala.

Accommodation: Accommodation in kutis (electricity and water available).

Meals: The meals are almost luxurious. Meals are taken in community with the monks. Those who want to be safe with the drinking water (spring water) should use a brought water purification agent.

Costs: On a donation basis.

Climate: Pleasant, sometimes cool.

What to bring: Alarm clock, flashlight with spare batteries, umbrella, and insect repellent. A sleeping bag is highly recommended. Also, white “upasaka” clothing (white shirt and white sarong or white trousers) is necessary.
